The University of Michigan School of Dentistry’s Office of Admissions conducts interviews for about 300 students each year. Each candidate interviews with 10 different individuals from the School of Dentistry and each of these interviews result in an evaluation submitted by the interviewer using an iPad. With 30 interviewers at each interview day, the admissions staff needed a resource for interviewers needing to navigate the ipad interface, log into wifi, and open the interview form.
Most interviewers enter the interview room a few minutes before interviews are to take place. With limited admissions staff on hand, the interviewers needed a quick reference guide to walk them through the process of setting up their iPad. I designed a job aid to be used by interviewers broken into 3 parts; connect to wifi, sign the online confidentiality form, and access the interview form. Each of these tasks could be broken down into 3 steps. I found that interviewers with little to no experience using the iPad, needed more handholding and wanted an admissions staff member to walk them through the process. Therefore, I designed the job aid for those with some iPad usage experience, which greatly reduced the demand on the admissions staff in the moments leading up to the interviews.
The outcome was a small laminated step-by-step handout on a half-sheet of 8.5×11 inch paper.
